Vicenza Middle School Sparks Student Success with Rich Tasks and Google Sheets
Quarter 1 flew by! In just nine weeks, 6th grade computer applications students explored the core functions of Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Google Slides. After practicing each Google App for Education, students demonstrated their mastery through creative assignments. Each class also included typing practice, reinforcing essential keyboarding skills for 21st-century learning. A strong typing foundation helps students complete digital assignments more efficiently and confidently. Our lessons also integrated basic computer knowledge and digital citizenship to promote responsible and informed technology use.
In the final two weeks of the quarter, students were introduced to CTE (Career and Technical Education) career exploration and Google Sheets. Last year, many students found Sheets challenging, so this year I redesigned the unit with rich tasks — engaging materials to make learning more enjoyable and meaningful.
Students began by completing an interest assessment to discover careers that align with their passions. Using that information, they played a budgeting game to gain a basic understanding of financial planning. They learned key Google Sheets functions and applied them to calculate expenses. It was inspiring to see their excitement as they imagined their future dream homes and careers.
To build on this momentum, students tackled a bedroom makeover project. They used Sheets to create a budget, generated pie charts to visualize spending, and used Google Image Search to design mood boards. These activities not only reinforced spreadsheet skills but also encouraged creativity and critical thinking.
With only two lessons left in the quarter, we will wrap up with computer troubleshooting and a fun Kahoot review game titled “The Ultimate Computer Knowledge Battle.” I am eager to see if students still remember what RAM stands for, who (if anyone) owns the internet, and what USB means. Most importantly, I hope they leave this class with a stronger foundation in technology and improved digital skills that will support their learning across all subjects.
