6th Grade ELA Guest Speaker Event with a Therapy Dog!

For the third year in a row, Captain Denise Sorbet captivated Vicenza Middle School sixth graders with her inspiring journey to becoming and working as a veterinarian. Before her engaging and informative presentation, students had built background knowledge by reading a variety of informational texts about animals. They also participated in Philosophical Chairs discussions, debating topics such as whether prospective pet owners should be required to obtain a license and the ethics of animal testing. During the guest speaker event, students asked thoughtful and insightful questions. They were surprised to learn that there are only about 30 veterinary schools in the United States and that success in the field requires dedication, perseverance, and hard work.
Students were especially fascinated by Captain Sorbet’s real-world experiences, including treating a tiger, parachuting from a plane with a dog, food inspection duties, and developing expertise across many different animal species. To top it all off, students had the unforgettable opportunity to pet and hug Ike, her calm and affectionate therapy dog, and watch him perform his impressive tricks, an experience they will surely remember.
Captain Sorbet has been selected for an Emergency and Critical Care residency at Texas A & M University College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.
We wish her all the best for her next chapter of life and a safe PCS journey home
